Oh man, i just read a headline the other day that motorcycle deaths were up something like 50% since the law was repealed.

His death is tragic. Also tragic is the lack of impact his death will have on the risks taken by the helmet free community.

Nothing changed when Indian Larry died (from a very survivable fall), nothing will change with this loss.

So is there actually any sort of value to not having a motorcycle helmet law? I know there is the MURICA FREEDOM thing but it just seems plain stupid. I see it all the time when I venture over to Pennsylvania; people cruising around on Harleys with no helmet, likely shorts, and maybe a wife beater. Makes no sense to me why someone would do that, but there must be some sort of value in it that I just don’t understand?

Too soon, but I have to get this out.

Q: What’s the difference between Peter Pettalia, and his Motorcycle Helmet Bill?

A: Only one of them died on the floor.

I just can’t comprehend why people would ever get on a bike without full protective gear. I love freedom as much as the next guy, but I also love being alive, being able to feed myself, being able to talk, watching my son grow up......the list goes on.

had a really good discussion about this with some of my students. One the reasons is for whiplash. Some helmets are VERY heavy, and the whiplash you would get from a something that could be a very minor accident might make it worse.

ofc, the odd of that happening are slim to none, so I’ll take the lid thank you very much.

another thing: non-helemt states actually have eye protection laws. You HAVE to have some form or safety-rated eye protection while on the bike, lest a bug or something get in your eye while driving.

I’d never heard the whiplash thing before, talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater though.

It is unknown if he was wearing a helmet. People are assuming that since he didn’t think people should be forced to wear helmets, that he didn’t think it was smart to wear a helmet.

Ikr? A small part of my mind was like: you know, I GUESS that makes some sense?

but at the same time...if you get hit hard enough to have whip, lash, I can almost guaran-fucking-tee you that you are also going to hit the ground. hard.

That’s like the argument I’ve heard about not wearing your seat belt because you’re better off being flung from your vehicle in the world’s most perfect accident.

Ive always wondered what people do with the helmet when they park places. Do helmets get stolen often? I would have to hope someone has come up with a good lock system for that. I could see the advantage of not wearing full leathers all the time but its all about risk management. The helmet seems just as essential as a seat belt in a car, if not more so. Although I imagine the “no helmet law” folks are against seat belt laws as well.

That kind of sounds like the people that don’t wear seatbelts because “the buckle might get damaged in a crash and not release, while the car simultaneously catches fire”.
